When you adopt a dog from a shelter, is there anything you need to be wary of?
You know how you need to ask a breeder a lot of questions before getting a dog from them. Well is there anything that you need to ask or be on the lookout for before getting a dog from a shelter?

This is a good question. I think a lot of people go into shelters unprepared, and that can make a big difference in the success of the trip.
When you go to the shelter, it’s a good idea to look around before asking anything. Take a look at the dogs and consider those that are alert, but not terribly nervous or extremely loud and excited. Aim for a dog who is somewhat clean and whose kennel is, for the most part, tidy. Don’t be afraid to consider an adult dog.
You want to ask where the dog came from. Not all dogs are stray or picked up at large. This may reveal some important things about the dog; if it had a previous home, you may discover some good or bad qualities about the dog; for example, the dog may be used to children and other pets, or may have been destructive with furniture.
Ask if you can see the dog outside of the kennel; many shelters have yards or play rooms where you can interact with the dog. This gives you a chance to really look over the dog. It’s eyes, ears and nose should be clean and clear. You can check it’s fur for fleas or matting, and look at it’s gums and teeth. You can also see if the dog knows any commands, how it walks on a leash, and how it interacts with people – if it is nervous, jumpy, etc.
Ask about the general health and behavior of the dog – if it’s been treated for anything, if it’s spayed/neutered, if it’s vaccinated and dewormed, and if it’s shown any signs of illness or injury since arriving, and also if it’s shown any aggression towards people, other dogs, or other animals, or signs of being possessive of food or toys.
Talk to the staff about what breed the dog is (or is assumed to be) and find out what size it is expected to grow to, how old it is, and any common problems with dogs of that type. Ask about how much food and exercise the dog should be receiving based on these things.
Ask about the adoption fee and what, if anything, it covers. Find out if there are any conditions on the adoption – most shelters have at least a few.
Talk to the staff about your daily routines and lifestyle, and see what dogs they recommend for you.
You want to walk out of there knowing as much as possible about the dog and feeling prepared to look after it. The dog that’s best for you may not be the one you want, so go with an open mind, look at several dogs and not just the first one to catch your eye.
